Damselflies of Brazil
This is the second of a bilingual (English and Portuguese) two-volume work on the damselflies (Zygoptera) of Brazil treating the large family Coenagrionidae as well as corrections and additions to Volume 1 thus completing a survey of all known damselflies from arguably the most biologically diverse country on earth. As with its predecessor, it will allow entomologists, aquatic biologists, freshwater ecologists, and persons interested in natural history the means to identify all described species of damselflies (Zygoptera) thus far known to occur in this amazingly rich country. With more than 300 species distributed among ten families, Brazil contains one of the most species-rich damselfly assemblages in the world. The book begins with an introductory chapter containing illustrations of all diagnostic characters, collection, preservation techniques, and identification key to genera of Coenagrionidae. Each species account includes original literature citation, synonymies, references to described larvae, and diagnostic illustrations, usually of the caudal appendages and/or wing scans. The last chapter includes an extensive, up-to-date bibliography and complimentary glossary. More than 1500 diagnostic illustrations (of which almost 400 are original) for the 154 species of Coenagrionidae species are included which should make identification of the damselfly fauna of Brazil considerably easier than was previously possible. The volume includes 43 color photos of examples from all families, a description of the larva and habits of the poorly-known helicopter damselfly, Mecistogaster asticta, and addition of 11 species of non-coenagrionid species not included in Volume 1.
