Abstract: This is the first of a two-volume work covering all the described species of damselflies (Zygoptera) of Brazil. The present volume includes all 155 non-Coenagrionidae species, divided in 9 families and 28 genera. Keys and diagnostic characters for all the families and genera and diagnostic illustrations are presented for 153 of the known 155 species. The volume concludes with a glossary (in English and Portuguese) and bibliography of more than 120 papers. The following synonymies are proposed: Lestes mediorufus Calvert, 1909 is a junior synonym of Lestes minutus Selys, 1862, Perissolestes pollux Kennedy, 1941 is a junior synonym of Perissolestes cornutus (Selys, 1886), Mecistogaster amazonica Sjöstedt, 1918 is a junior synonym of Mecistogaster buckleyi McLachlan, 1881 and Amazoneura Machado, 2004 is a junior synonym of Forcepsioneura Lencioni, 1999. Heteragrion ovatum Selys is considered a nomen nudum, since the type is lost and it has been impossible to confidently associate any specimens with its description.
